It has been a while so I thought that it would be good to go back to the beginning and explain how I first got into yoga.

I have found that people over the years have presumed that I started with a physical practice when in fact my first intro to yoga was through pranayama and a very insightful out of hours GP, who came to my house (oh yes those were the days!) went on to explain to me that my lungs were not the enemy.

In the middle of the night he explained this to a 7 year old child  “you need to make friends with your lungs” He didn’t just come to give me the medication I needed but also to impart some valuable knowledge on how I could use my breath to help me when my asthma flared up and also the importance of staying calm.

The most important thing was he never said that it would cure me, he just said it would help and support during difficult times. And this is important he saw it as a support system to keep in my toolbox he didn’t give me any kind of false hope that I would suddenly be cured or that this was something that could replace my inhalers.

There is so much more to yoga than just a physical practice, which makes it possible to practice even when you’re unwell. It was another 11 years before I started a physical practice.

And pranayama has played a really important role in my current recovery with EDS (Elhers Danlos Syndrome) there were a number of weeks when I was unable to get out of bed.

How did your yoga journey start?

And no lotus position is not a requirement for pranayama it just looks a little more interesting than savasana.
